KUALA LUMPUR – In what will be remembered as one of the most thrilling matchups of the CelcomDigi Netball Super League (NSL) 2026, the Johor Jewels secured a hard-fought 66-50 victory over the incredibly formidable KL Wildcats in Match 28. Facing off against a team with a rich championship history and exceptional pedigree, the Jewels had to dig deep and play at their absolute best to overcome their fierce metropolitan rivals.

With both teams eyeing the league crown, the Wildcats entered Stadium Juara ready to go toe-to-toe with the defending champions, setting the stage for a spectacular showcase of elite netball.

An Explosive Opening

The first quarter lived up to every expectation of a blockbuster clash. The KL Wildcats, known for their tactical brilliance, came out with a blistering pace. Their attacking talisman, Ugandan She Cranes star Shadia Nassanga, immediately demonstrated why she is considered one of the most dangerous shooters in the league. Supported beautifully by the agile and intelligent feeds from Goal Attack Khairul Najiha Iman, the Wildcats executed their offensive plays with surgical precision.

The Johor Jewels, however, met the challenge head-on. Australian Diamond import Gretel Bueta answered back with her signature elite athleticism, keeping the Wildcats’ stellar defensive unit, anchored by veterans like Noramirah Dayana, on extremely high alert. The opening fifteen minutes were a spectacular, high-scoring chess match, with both powerhouses trading magnificent goals.

The Mid-Court Battlefield

As the match progressed into the second quarter, the intensity only amplified. The KL Wildcats fiercely contested every pass, forcing the Johor Jewels to earn every inch of the court. The game turned into a spectacular battle for mid-court supremacy.

It was here that the Johor Jewels managed to secure a crucial advantage. The world-class playmaking of former Silver Fern Laura Langman, operating alongside the incredibly consistent Pow Mei Foong, allowed Johor to find tiny pockets of space amidst the Wildcats’ suffocating defense. Langman’s visionary feeds into the circle, coupled with the seamless synergy between Bueta and local standout An Najwa Azizan, helped Johor edge ahead. Yet, the Wildcats never relented, continuously pushing the pace and keeping the pressure squarely on the southern squad.

A Defensive Masterclass from Both Sides

The second half transformed into a gritty, defensive spectacle. The KL Wildcats actively disrupted Johor’s rhythm, continuously threatening to close the gap with brilliant interceptions and high-pressure marking.

To maintain their lead against such a relentless opponent, Johor’s defensive unit had to be flawless. National defender Nur Syafazliyana put on an inspired performance. Facing off against the brilliant Nassanga, Syafazliyana and her defensive partners had to execute perfectly timed double-teams to disrupt the Wildcats’ pinpoint feeding lines. The KL Wildcats fought valiantly for every rebound and contested every aerial ball, making Johor work incredibly hard to convert defensive stops into goals on the other end.

Respect Earned on the Court

Entering the final fifteen minutes, the KL Wildcats threw everything they had at the Jewels, showcasing immense heart and championship mentality. They fought fiercely until the very last second, proving exactly why they are a perennial threat in the NSL.

However, the Johor Jewels managed to withstand the relentless wave of Wildcats attacks. By rotating their squad masterfully and maintaining a flawless level of ball retention in the final minutes, the Jewels secured the 66-50 victory.

Defeating a team of the KL Wildcats’ caliber is never an easy feat. For the Johor Jewels, this 16-point victory is a testament to their resilience and ability to execute under immense pressure against a truly elite opponent. As both teams look ahead to the knockout stages, this spectacular match served as a reminder that the road to the NSL crown runs through the toughest of competitors.
