KUALA LUMPUR – Johor Jewels were crowned champions after defeating Terengganu Marvels 56–48 at Stadium Juara, Bukit Kiara on Sunday night, lifting the inaugural CelcomDigi NSL Regional Cup 2026 title.

Having previously lost to the Marvels in the NSL grand final the week before, as well as a narrow 55–53 defeat during the Regional Cup group stage, the Jewels entered the final with a clear objective to secure the championship. Their performance reflected effective tactical adjustments, superior physical conditioning, and exceptional commitment throughout the match.

Tactical Intelligence and Defensive Resilience

The Marvels had been Johor’s toughest opponents throughout the season, but the Jewels eventually found the formula to overcome them. From the opening quarter, Johor displayed a more structured game plan, supported by clear on-court communication and a solid defensive system.

Australian import defender Matilda “Tilly” McDonell continued her outstanding form, applying constant physical pressure that disrupted Terengganu’s attacking flow. The Jewels closed down space effectively, forcing the Marvels into uncharacteristic errors.

Despite strong resistance from Terengganu’s defensive unit, led by Cornelia Mupenda—who was named Best Defender of the tournament—Johor’s collective defensive effort gradually wore their opponents down.

Footwork, Fitness, and a Fourth-Quarter Surge

For three quarters, the match remained tightly contested. However, in the final 15 minutes, Johor Jewels’ superior fitness and precise footwork became decisive.

As the Marvels began to show signs of fatigue, Johor’s midcourt, led by captain Nurfariha Abdul Razak, maintained high intensity and sharp execution. Their attacking movement and clean landing technique helped them avoid stepping violations while enabling fast transitions into attack.

This allowed the Jewels to produce a decisive scoring run in the fourth quarter, building a lead of up to 10 goals—their largest margin against the Marvels this season.

Championship Finish

Inside the shooting circle, international import Gretel Bueta delivered a standout performance with clinical finishing and aerial dominance. She was named Tournament MVP and Best Shooter, while Fatin Najiha earned the Best Attacker award.

At the final whistle, the 56–48 scoreline reflected a team that refused to be denied. While the Terengganu Marvels remained strong challengers throughout the season, Johor Jewels ultimately proved they possess the championship quality required to be crowned NSL Regional Cup winners.
